klr 250 lining up cam chain

I just replaced the piston on my klr 250, its a 1999. but I don't know how the cam gears should be oriented to each other. theres a dot on each gear but i dont know if they should face eachother like on my old ford pickup, or if they should line up elsewhere. can someone please help me, I dont have a book, if someone

on my old ford you just use a straight edge and line them up to eachother that way does anyone know?
