I have been working on a 1978 kz650b, when i removed the sprocket cover to take off the chain and oil it down. The clutched worked great before this but when i put on the clutch/sprocket cover i cannot get it to grabb. The lever has good teension and snaps back fine but it just does not grab. Whats up? i also have taken out the rod that goes through the casings and hooks up to the cover could i have put it in wrong or is there some kind of thing its supposed to hook too? thanks :(

Did you lose the ball bearing that resides at the other end of the clutch pushrod?

Sounds like something is binding causing the clutch to remain disengaged. I'd take it apart again and make sure that everyting is in there straight and free.

This happend to me.
Turns out the clutch cable was not seated correctly in it's little hole in the sprocket cover. The edge of the cable was stuck on the lip of the hole, so it was stretching the cable like the clutch lever was pulled. But I couldn't tell from the feel of the clutch lever; it felt normal.

I've had some recent adjusting issues with my clutch following changing the sprokets and chain. It took a few tries but I found that I had over adjusted the presuure on the pushrod so the clutch was disengaged continualy. I could actually turn the rear tire with the bike off and in first gear with minimal effort. I am not familiar with your configuation (I have a KZ1000 Police) but I did find a file on the Yahoo KZ1000 Police group under "clutches" to be helpful.
