Clutch assembly
05 Jul 2026 18:53 - 06 Jul 2026 06:42
Hi guys, working on the clutch,
Ive a question about the steelplates that goes with the friction plates into the clutch housing.
The steelplates have two sides:
One side is more rounded and finished. The other side is sharp and not rounded. Which side should face forward?? (See pics)
Thanx in advance.

It doesn't matter which way they go but my OCD dictates that they all go in facing the same way which is usually rounded side facing out..

Thanx Zed. Just what i needed to continue. Im going to mount extra strong springs from TRW.
Course my clutch is functioning very poor. I already place new friction plates, and replace the push rod for a RVS steel one. Its mostly or not enough or slipping. There is also a lot of room on the release handle, where you hook the cable in to. Would it makes sense to install a spacer brushing to eliminate this play?

There should be two or three places that you can take up extra cable slack. At the perch (lever), mid-way down the clutch cable, and at the clutch release mechanism (if equipped). Since you are using a newer style release then there’ll be no adjustment there. You should take up most of the free-play at the mid-way adjuster. I set the perch adjuster about 1-2 turns from seated and adjust the mid-way adjusted so there’s about 3/32-1/8” of gap between the perch and lever when the lever is pulled and takes up the slack.
