1978 KZ1000B2 LTD Shifter Shaft Seals
23 May 2026 07:29 - 23 May 2026 07:31
I removed the sprocket cover when addressing an oil leak from the stator cover. Looking at the shifter shaft seals, it appears that there is a sleeve or bushing in the shifter shaft seals in the sprocket cover (see pics below). None of the parts breakdowns that I have seen show this. Has anyone encountered something like this before? Thanks for any information you can provide.

There is no sleeve as stock in the sprocket cover.
Just a metal clad seal set in a wider recess at each end of the hole machined in the aluminium cover.

Those 2 sprocket cover seals don't really do a lot. They really act as dust seals rather then oil seals. Why are you removing them?

Yes, as asphalt900 (Clay) has already noted:
These "seals" function more as a guide or support for the gearshift shaft—and, of course, they are also intended to prevent oil from leaking out from behind the cover. This design was actually carried over from the predecessor model, the Z1, back when those bikes still featured a chain oil pump—a setup that often resulted in a significant amount of oil accumulating behind the cover (especially if the pump's output rate had been set too high!)....But first reason is a outer support for the shaft!
