Stupid question of the day !!
So one for you motor guys, I have started re-assembling my "J" motor and have this question. The picture shows a location just above the shift drum, I don't remember removing anything from here but it lines up with a "cut out" in the shift drum, so the question is

- Am I missing something to limit drum travel (I don't think I am) ?
- Is this a facility to lock the drum with a peg when tightening and removing the screw in the neutral light switch plate ? (my suspicion)

Wonder if it's there to allow oil to drip on to the shift drum - not sure whether that would be necessary, though

It's a casting remnant brought over from the earlier Z1 etc kickstart engines and was the position for the neutral detent which was relocated to the end of the shift drum on the later J and GPZ variants.

Thanks for the reassurance Rob, I couldn’t remember removing anything but the alignment with a rebate in the drum was niggling at me. Better to ask than get it back in the bike and have an issue:)
