Metallic rattling noise w/ video was created by CB82
Hey guys, I have a 1982 KZ1000. I’ve noticed a rattling noise coming from the engine. Any thoughts on what this noise could be? I’m not sure if it’s something I should be concerned about. Sounds like metallic tapping. Has anyone ever experienced a similar rattling noise? I’ll post a video. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Could be coming from the clutch area. My 82 KZ1100 has a similar sound. More pronounced at idle? There are shock absorbing springs behind the clutch that loosen up over time and milage. How many miles? What are your riding habits? A lot of bike sound like that.

Ok cool thanks I’ll look into the clutch springs. That’s good info to know. I’m also not trying to do unnecessary work so if bikes just sound that way that’s fine I’m down. Just wanted to make sure nobody thought it was a major issue. Bike has 14K miles. I haven’t been riding it. I inherited the bike a few months ago, but I haven’t ridden it. Just working on getting it running good.
Main thing I’ve been trying to chase down now is a cold start issue. Bike will not cold start no matter what I do. Once I sprayed starter fluid into the air intake it starts up perfectly fine and idles and runs just fine. I can turn the bike off. Come back 10-15 minutes later and starts right back up when it’s still warm, but when it sits and goes cold it doesn’t start up. I’m definitely new to working on motorcycles so I’m having fun learning how it all works. I already pulled the carbs (followed one of the million YouTube videos on how to clean carbs) but maybe I didn’t do good enough job. I can pull the carbs off again and I’ll probably put them in the ultrasonic cleaner this time. Thinking the pilot circuit might still be clogged although carb cleaner sprayed out of the circuit just fine and the main jet and the pilot jet both were not clogged. I could see right through them. Everything I’ve read says the issue I’m having is probably a clogged pilot circuit so guess I’ll need to clean it again and more thoroughly

Before taking the carburetors out again, maybe you could try a leak-down test, to determine the engine has excellent compression.

Doesn't start on choke when cold but does with starting fluid, restarts fine when warm? Your chokes arent working or the choke passages are plugged. If the idle circuits were the issue it wouldn't run or start when warm.

The springs Im talking about are behind the large flywheel not the clutch springs themselves. They cant be replaced in general. APE has kits but beyond most peoples ability.

Check valve clearance’s and cam chain tension, get yourself a good workshop manual before you take top cover off and read it properly, because you can end up many dollars out of pocket if you don’t.

Just listened to your video, that’s a top end tick, camshafts, tensioner, idler wheels, clearances, cam binding, or dry bearings. Could be any of these.
