85 GPz750 starter clutch repacement, no biggie
02 Oct 2025 16:33
Not done a starter clutch replacement in a Kawasaki before, so watched some very helpful utube videos.
Got it out and replaced with a salvaged part from a 78 KZ650.

Good to hear it's sorted, hopefully it will last (this seems to be a weak point on the 650/750) did you replace any of the rubbers while it was apart ?

I'm waiting for gasket kit to be delivered. I'll replace all O rings it includes.

Given the work involved I'm not sure I would go with "salvage" parts but "who knows" maybe you will get lucky

Totally agree. This old rollers starter clutches are like used batteries. Better not to reuse them. With all the work involved, it is better to go with all new parts. Even in this forum thera were some tales of people who used recycled, or only changed the rollers/spring kit,....only to do it again in a short time after because the racer and slots also wear. I have done it, but used all new parts. If I had to do it again, would update to the sprag type starting clutch of the ZR-7,....although this would also require the '7s secondary shaft.

Today 17:22 - Today 17:27
I just used the center stand. When I needed to look underneath, I just lay on my back but it was a close look.
PS: The bike came without an airbox. Could not find the GPz box so I bought an 82 KZ750 airbox. It fits, you can see it in this pic.
