is the gear on the end of the starter shaft a part that can be replaced?   If so, where could I purchase one?   1980 KZ 1000 E2 Shaft

I assume you are seeking part # 21167-002 (# 26 see pic here  www.partzilla.com/catalog/kawasaki/motor...motor-starter-clutch )
If that is correct a search on line for the part # indicates several are listed on ebay.

Thank you for your reply, but the part I'm looking for is the small gear on the end of the starter motor shaft.  I have recently seen it called a "spur gear".  I suspect I may have to visit a junk yard or maybe a starter repair shop would have one.

Is this what you are referring to? if so I believe it is part of the armature in the motor

The very small gear on the end of the starter is actually the splined part of the armature shaft as can be seen in the example pic below.
It is not replacable unless you either fit another armature or complete starter motor..

Yes sir, that's it.  Is there a source for the armature only?  New or used.... preferably new.

Probably more economical to buy a complete new starter.
Rick Motorsport stock one that fits that has more torque too.
Just bought one myself .

May i ask, what's wrong with yours and can you show a picture of the splined end of what you have? You have to realize if the gear on the starter is messed-up then the idler gear might be too. What are the problems you're trying to eliminate? I rebuild these Mitsuba starters and have many parts loose and completed units. And Yes Ricks sells a 4 brush replacement compared to the earlier 2 brush but unless you're over using the starter, beating a dead horse of other mechanical issues, a 2-brush works just fine.
