Engines with primary chains as your 650 has are known to be especially noisy if the carbs are not synchronized for a nice smooth idle.

It really helps tickover if the clutch basket dampers are not loose. Any misfire or stumble creates a pendulum effect making the primary chain rattle. Its a big job to do as it involves dismantling the basket to replace them and they are not available as replacements so have to be fabricated.

What is the idle speed set to? If it's set below 1000 rpm the rattle will occur. My 1977 KZ650 with more than 61,000 miles has zero rattle at 1050 rpm, but below 1000 it does make a bit of noise. The Kawasaki manual recommends setting the idle speed to between 950 - 1050 rpm. Ed

Possibly. I think the best approach is to insure that ALL of the routine maintenance, as described in the owner's manual and in the factory service manual, is up to date and within specification. All of it.
If the noise persists, then is the time to look at more complicated and expensive possibilities like clutch basket dampers.
