Gear box problem
11 Jun 2020 11:37
hello friends I apologize for my English, I am French and made the translation. I have a Kawasaki kz 650 that I bought without being able to try. After a big restoration, I wanted to try it but the gears did not pass. engine off, when I turn the rear wheel I can only pass the first and neutral. the selector is like blocked to pass 2-3-4-5...
Thanks

This is normal on kawasakis. When at a standstill, the gear selector will only allow for shifting from 1st to neutral and back down. Try getting it out on the street and shifting. If you're still having problems shifting into higher gears then you have a gear problem.

That's normal on newer Kawasaki bikes, not all Kawasaki bikes. The 1977 KZ650 does not have that lockout. I believe it was first used on the KZ650 (and probably other model KZ bikes) in 1978. The original poster doesn't say what year bike he has, but if it's a model later than 1977 that is normal. Ed

I adjusted the clutch with a help from this forum. I managed to get the bike to go first in the garage!! to be able to pass the other gears it is necessary to take more speed on the road? thanks again a lot

If your bike is on the center stand and the rear wheel is off the ground I think you can shift through the gears with the engine running. But be careful to ensure the rear wheel doesn't touch the ground while it is spinning! Ed

Be SURE to use change your motor oil to one marked "JASO MA" compliant when you change your clutch. Otherwise you will very quickly ruin your new clutch discs. There are a number of oils varying from inexpensive to very expensive that are JASO MA compliant. Ed
