Gear shifter replace rubber

I’m planning to replace the rubber on the gear shifter, do you heat up the rubber before to push it on?

1981 KZ650-D4, with 1981 z750L engine (Wiensco 810 big bore).

Yes, a little heat will soften the rubber.

Try heating it in hot water along with a little grease.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

By heating the rubber with hot water, was it just like knife in butter!
