Cam question; recommendation?
29 Dec 2019 12:39 - 29 Dec 2019 14:05
I have a '79 KZ1000E (Shafty) with a stage 3 Jet Kit on stock carbs, K&N oil and air filter, Dyna Ignition and green coil. My riding style is generally light to light. I cruse and very rarely go up in RPM's. My bike is highly polished and always pretty! I am not a speed demon, I like to just ride but LOVE that Cam 'LOPE' sound! I am very happy and content with my bikes performance so a slight improvement over its current performance is welcomed but I don't want the 'turbo affect' after I reach a specific RPM. I'm really just after a low and maybe mid range upgrade but I want that sound... I want people to know it has a cam in it when its idling . That is pretty much it!
What cam would you recommend for my set-up? and then secondly, how easy would the install be? Are other things needed when installing a new cam? Lastly, is there a break-in period and if so, what is the process and does the process change depending on the cam I go with?
Thanks in advance,

Sounds like you want to stick with stock cams. A performance cam will not do anything unless your willing to modify the engine to use the cams. The lope your after is not conducive to a streetable bike.

I would buy a good used set of GPZ1100UT (ZX1100A1) cams and APE cam sprockets.
Trust me you will hear and feel the diffrence.

How much more modifying would my bike need? Stage 3 jet kit with stock carbs, Dayna ignition and coils, K&N air cleaner, 4 into 1 kerker header with no baffle muffler. Other than cracking the motor open, I'd say I'm pretty modified now? Am I missing something?

The lope at idle are from high lift long duration cams. That requires porting, high compression pistons, stiffer valve springs, slotted cam sprockets, cam clearancing and larger carbs. Just dropping in high lift long duration cams won't work because you'll never be able to tune them to run correctly. Scirocco has the right idea but your not going to get the lopey idle.

Where did you find that... I searched for days and came up empty... Jim at Redline sold them but told me they were no longer available... something about the factory that built them burned down.

Scirocco, thanks for the lead, I have parts coming from them for my ‘76kz900 front dual disc conversion. Delivery time is lengthy but worth it
