Now would be a good time to check and adjust the valve clearances as needed.

Gosh, don't know what came over me, especially since I've done this a few times before, and with a Kawasaki 550 particularly..
Not getting started on the Christmas booze for a few days yet, so I guess it must have been a bad case of NEAS (New Engine Anxiety Syndrome). That, or a brain fart, brain misfire, or whatever. Thanks to all for the patient advice.
