Hello all how are you all doing ?

I just acquired a 1980 650 and got a couple of issues , one it grinds when starter runs and there is oil spash coming out of the exhaust when running hitting the back of the number plate and drips oil.

I will start investigating but if someone could point me in the right direct with common faults etc.

Much appreciated

Simon

Grinding is starter clutch and oil could be rings or valve stem seals. Both are engine strip to a degree so it might be easier to take the engine out do a full strip / rebuild. At least you can check everything quite easily then and be confident it won't let you down.

Hello Warren thank you for your reply, sorry for the late reply but i have been quite busy , i took off the exhaust and ran the engine and it is actually unburnt fuel spraying out the exhaust and its running on 3 cylinders,

plan is to open up all carbs and clean rebuild them, any idea where i can get a kit with all the seals etc to rebuild the 4 carbs?

also where can i source a starter clutch?

Thank you again for your assistance

Carbs-
The hard parts, jets, floats and such, rarely need to be replaced. Most often, all they need is a careful cleaning. The soft parts, orings and gaskets definitely should be replaced. If you have the carbs with accelerator pump, then it looks like all the soft parts are still available from the factory. If you have the non-accelerator version, it looks like you will need to get the fuel bowl gaskets elsewhere. Check Z1Ent. Factory parts are almost always best.

Starter clutch-
Partzilla shows the rollers, pins, and springs still available. The starter gear, which is sometimes the problem, is nla new.
