KZ1000J3 - Oil Drain Bolt Stripped
05 Apr 2017 12:05 - 05 Apr 2017 12:06
Not sure what happened here. Turned ratchet counter clockwise to remove oil drain plug and it stripped and is spinning in both directions now. WTF. It almost looks like it was being screwed in based on my view of the crush washer.
My local shop said they can drill out the bolt to remove it, re-tap the hole (not sure what they do here - perhaps someone can comment) and put in a new washer/ bolt and it will be as good a new.
I wanted to post this to confirm what I have been told is good and in case anyone has any tips for this work. Bike is going in tomorrow.
Thanks,

You can purchase sell tapping oversize drain plugs at auto parts stores. You gotta get out the old plug yourself first though.
Optional to this is to helicoil the threads or get a new/used sump cover. Removing the sump cover to do the thread repair is recommended in either case.

Oh no that sucks. I also would pull the pan and do the repair properly with a thread insert and perhaps change the type of bolt with a straight thread .
Good luck

I would do the same as Nessism says and you can clean the oil pan and and oil pump filter mesh.
A lot of junk parts are collected down there over the time.

Thanks for the comments. As Barney knows there have never been short cuts with this bike. Having said that the mechanic that would be doing this is very experienced (35+ years) and it was suggested on the phone it could very likely be done without taking the pan off but he will know for sure once they see it. Having said this too the Kerker will be fully removed so full access to the drain plug is there. Is this realistic understanding thd experience and access at play? I believe a new pan is available. OEM gasket too. Will check tomorrow on availability to get pan as an option. The other thing is the new threading steel as opposed to aluminum? This I gather is better/stronger on long term?

I had the same issue and pulled the pan to fix. No matter what, drilling and tapping the hole on-bike is going to leave metal fragments in the pan. Grease on the drill and tap helps, but won't get it all.
With the pan out I drilled and tapped the hole to 14x1.5. Then used a replacement magnetic plug with a crush washer. Same size plug and washer used on Honda car engines. Here's a few on Amazon: www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=sear...+magnetic+drain+plug
Torque it to 30ft/lbs, and replace the crush washer every oil change. It's bigger and stronger than OEM, and will catch metal particles from clutch friction discs. Just like they use magnets in automatic transmissions.

Hello!!
A Nice pair of REAL vise-grips, with a little propane torch heat. This stuff happens all the time with oil drain plugs.
i assume just the metal plug hex is rounded off?
