Not for long but longer than it should after it starts. If I blip the throttle it shuts off but will occasionally come back on at idle. Not sure if this portends more problems down the road. This is on the KZP with 44K miles. It has a few oil leaks but is not low on oil and runs strong.

I'd check the oil pump. The later models where supposed to have upgraded oil pumps. You could try this guy. He has lots of oil pumps.

Mine did that one time when I had a dealer change the oil - he put 10-30 wt in it when I run with 20-50 wt. I changed it out again and all was good.
I live near Portland, Oregon and my rider is a '76 KZ900 I bought new. I'm also in the process of restoring another one and a '73 Z1.

It likely means the oil pressure is low for whatever reason. Best to get a gauge and read actual pressure. As somebody pointed out, you can juice the pressure up by switching from 10-40 to 20-50 but that's not addressing the problem. Could also throw in a can of STP high mileage and get the same effect. I kind of doubt it's the pump but it could just be wear on the bottom end. My 750 twin has 84k miles and the light stays on for a few seconds after a cold start but it does not come on at idle.

My problem was when the bike was new.....

Never heard of a new bike that needed 20-50 to get enough idle pressure to make the light go out. Standard oil for mine is 10-40.

I bought the '76 KZ900 new from a dealer in Miami and the dealer (and owner's manual) said to use 20-50 in warm climates. It got so hot there I had to install an oil cooler to keep from frying the points in traffic.
I was riding across the US and stopped to have the oil changed while on the road. That is when I found that lighter oils would cause the light to stay on. I have about 60,000 miles on the bike now with the only problem I have had was valve seals needed to be replaced.
I live in Oregon now and only rarely ride but usually when it is warm.

Oil pump is bad or clogged filter screen. Either way fix the problem

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configuration

I'm no expert on the low pressure sump system engines but I do know that if I was getting an oil light, the first thing I would want to do is read the pressure. It could be dangerously low or it could be OK and the sending unit might be flaky. Here is a gauge:

If the pressure is low, oil pump I first candidate to check.

I cleaned the screen when I replaced the oil pan gasket. Could be a worn oil pump. It happens more when the outside temperature is pretty warm. Currently running 15-40 Rotella.

Mine was. I rebuilt it, now I have more than enough oil pressure.
