Wow Patton, Thanx! I am currently polishing my "Crown collars" (clamps) and had not noticed the reliefs....I am sure that will help me out...Cruiser, if it would help you, I uploaded a pdf of an old set of Kerker installation instructions to the database the other day...MUCH more comprehensive than what came with my new V&H !

The split collar's for that V/H pipe will not work with a stock exhaust..
That pipe is a drag race header and will not work with the
stock rear brake padel set up
Also looking at the bluing I'd say your jetting is out in left field

left field,yes.He had 3 pods,mismatched,and never rejetted.Plus the plugs were 3 heat ranges too high.Amzaingly after the plugs were changed the bike runs strong and fast, but some backfiring.Probably the jets needed to be a lot bigger.He had made a makeshift brake pedal and footpeg to reach out and around the sidewinder pipes.I will be so glad to get this bike right.

I'm going to jump in here since this is a recent post.
My 1979 project is coming to life and I'm wondering what to do with the stock exhaust. The muffler connector pipe is cracked 360 on the left side and about to fall off on the right. I understand the importance and mystery of the connector pipe. That being said this bike is a project that was given to me for $0. I am looking to get the bike in running condition first and then enjoy it for a few 100 miles and then decide where to spend the money.
The bike is currently all stock, 1 owner, low miles and needs a new battery and tires.
At this point. I'm considering removing the muffler connector pipe from the 4-2 exhaust (actually it is off) and having it capped and welded on both ends for $20 at a local auto custom exhaust shop. What can I do to compensate for the difference in pressure without the connector pipe? My friend is suggesting re-jetting, but I don't believe it is a carb adjustment since this is on the opposite side of the flow.
Any thoughts are helpful and links to references.

If the stubs that it attaches to are gone you may be able to replace them with some copper pipe. I saw a posting here a long time ago where someone did that and was able to find copper that was the correct size. Ed

I actually have the connector pipe and the stubs are rotted, especially on the right side. I am not a welder and don't think a good connection can be made.

I would take the connector to Home Depot or Lowes to see if they have anything that matches, or you could try a car muffler shop to see if they have a couple short pieces of steel pipe for stubs that they can weld in for cheap. Ed

You might be able to find a crossover/connector pipe on eebbaayy. Or maybe use copper pipe & fittings - someone here on KZR did a repair when his rusted out.

Yes, that is it. Kudos for finding that. 
And if need be in addition to the copper fittings, I'd guess a guy could use exhaust tape/wrap as a patch if necessary, to kind of seal it up?

Patton, thanks for the link. After seeing, it makes sense and should be easy enough to assemble (I have plenty of residential copper plumbing experience). Obvious, I see this as a short term fix to making the original exhaust whole again. Right now I'm still at stage 1 of getting the engine running.
Today I'm charging a new battery and changing plugs and going for a start in the morning. After that the journey will never end.
