KZ000J3, Earls Oil Cooler
29 Oct 2013 18:41
Just wondering if anyone can tell me where you would place the horns with the Earls oil cooler installation. Also do you have to drain lines with oil change and does it effect the operation of the oil pressure switch? Finally are the performance and health benefits to the motor worth adding a cooler.
Thanks

I installed a 13 row earl's cooler on my bike.
The cooler needs to be isolated at the mounts. vibration is a killer to oil coolers.
My oil is drawn back into the crankcase when bike stops. I only have about 6 oz left in system.
No, a proper oil cooler system will not effect the oil pressure.
My switch doesn't work since I added the cooler. I have a pressure gauge added to get a real reading other than a light.
The cooler really does work.....OMR, has posted some numbers using the cooler and they were very positive.
Remember.....it really only works well when you are moving air though the cooler......in other words......you have to be moving.

Thanks. The kit comes with mounting brackets from Kipkawa. Should more be done then to isolate the cooler beyond what is supplied? How does the vibration effect them?

These coolers are lightly soldered. It doesn't take much to break these joints.
If you mount this cooler 100% firm......it will fail.
You can see the 1/8" orange-ish rubber in between my mount and cooler in pic above. I also didn't torque the bolts down either.

"My switch doesn't work since I added the cooler"....
Found the problem/fix to this if using the Z1 engine oil couplers....
The couplers have a non electrical contact sealer on them so the oil pressure switch plate can't make contact to the grounded engine!
Scrape/emory cloth or as I did, lightly touch up using a dremel sanding disk to the inside switch brass plate contact area... Oil light now works with no issues.
Made my own cooler mounts, used the side reflectors threaded holes for securing to the frame.
As for results/do they work, as mentioned bike has to be moving to be effective. Here in AZ, oh yeah needed for too freakin hot in the summer with out... Synthetic oil helps as well where it doesn't break down as quickly thus keeping the lubricating qualities. As I do, change the oil frequently as well...

My 1000 came to me with a Lockhart cooler already on it. I am Assuming that it came that way from the factory?

No; the 1980 KZ1000 would not have had an oil cooler as factory equipment. Ed
