KZ650 exhaust port spacing?
28 Jun 2013 19:27
Hi, first time poster here and I have a question that I am hoping one of you may be able to help with.
I am working on bringing a 1980/1982 KZ550 back to life and the exhaust is in terrible shape. I have been trying to find info on making a 650 exhaust fit since there are minimal options for the 550, but there is no conclusive information and one post where it "may have been done" but the origin of the exhaust was unconfirmed and simply speculated to be from a 650.
ANYWAYS the question: would one of you 650 owners mind giving me the 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 center to center dimensions of the exhaust ports so I can figure just how off they are and how hard it would be to persuade a 650 system onto my 550?
Thank you!

The KZ750 four has the same exhaust spacing as the KZ650, which I am pretty sure will not match a 550.
There was someone here that put a 85-86 GPz600 exhaust on a 550. IIRC he said it was an easy fit.

Thank you!
I'm looking for the same info. 650, 700, 750-4 should all be the same.
I tried google and KZR search (which is where I found this old topic).
Anyone?

I measured the distance of the pipes (pipe center to pipe center) on my 1977 KZ650-C1 and got the info below. Notice the measurement for #3 pipe is from #1 pipe not #2. This was the only way I could get a decent measurement with the pipes on the bike. These measurements are not deadly accurate but they should be pretty close.
Between #1 and #2 is about 3-3/16”
Between #1 and #3 is about 8-1/8”
Between #3 and #4 is about 3-3/16”

I checked the 650 head on my bench and I got (still eyeballing it though with calipers):
1-2 3.25"
2-3 4.75"
3-4 3.25"
1-2 3.25"
2-3 4.75"
3-4 3.25"

Thanks Ed and Matt!
Converting to mm I think you guys are saying Matt: 83 - 121 - 83, and Ed: 81 - 125 - 81 for the Kz650.
I thought I'd add my measurements just to complete this thread.
For the Kz550 exhaust spacing I get 83 - 98 - 83 (mm).

I measured three different 650/750 headers and got three different measurements.
The distance between 1-2 was pretty much 3-1/4”.
It was a variation of 4-1/8” ~ 5-1/8” between tube 2-3.

Is it possible to heat up high enougf and adjust the spacing on a 650/750 setup?

I didn't have to use any heat converting a 650 header to fit a 550. Then I converted the same one back to 650.
I just wanted to know if it could be done. It turns out the extra height from a 650 header makes it hang too low under a 550, so it ends up looking weird.
