I noticed today that I have oil dripping through the stator area for some reason, I thought the stator was a dry area?

That's what I thought (on mine) until I opened it up and saw that there are a couple of gears in there that have to be oiled. The starter idler gear meshes to the starter clutch gear to crank the motor.
On mine (and I've heard from several others) were the stator wires come out of the motor is a common area to have an oil leak. The rubber grommet that the wires come through gets old and shrinks.

I don't think you're supposed to have oil leaking out there! Time to get dirty!
