measuring valve clearance
25 Aug 2011 22:14
I am trying to adjust my valve clearance, but the picture in my manual is too dark. It says to "measure the clearance of each valve by inserting a thickness gauge between the adjusting screw and the valve stem". Can anyone help me out and tell me what I'm looking at?

From the top down in your photo you have the
Adjuster screw
Locknut
Body of the roker arm
cant see it in the photo but next should be the bottom of the adjuster screw
Top of valve stem is that circular thingy which is about the diameter of the body of rocker arm.
Between the bottom of the screw and the top of the valve stem there should be a gap when you have the correct timing marks lined up.
Thats where you need to measure.
I'm no good at drawing arrows either
This is from kz400.com www.kz400.com/KZ440MaintainanceFrameset.html but the pic is not very clear either.

That's where you need to measure....
The gap should appear when the rocker arm is in its highest position.
And which is where the end of the adjuster screw is furthest from touching the valve.
Good Fortune!
