Broken fin
07 Aug 2011 21:42
As I am waiting to get my cylinder head back from the shop, I've been cleaning the engine. I noticed the other day when I took the head off that there was a little chunk of fin broken off. This is something I must have overlooked when I bought her.
Is this an issue for the bike other than cosmetic? I saw on another thread where some of you guys had the same issue and used JB Weld to fill in/form a new fin for the fix. The pics i saw though were of the engine being painted afterwards. I wasn't planning on painting that part of the engine. What would it look like if I was to JB Weld it, sand it where I used the JB, and not paint it?
Here are a few pics:

I don't see that size break having any effect on cooling. If you just left the JB un-painted it would be slightly different color and you would always know it's there, but the untrained eye might not ever notice it since the head overhangs the jugs right there. If someone was on hands and knees looking at the motor, then it might look like a dirty fin. You could always hit it with a little silver high temp paint in that area. If you feathered it out, I doubt anyone would ever notice.

That's cool. I think that is what I will do. I'll touch it with some paint after JB Weld. Thanks.

A good aluminum welder could repair the broken fin in short order.

purely cosmetic. I would take my Dremel and a grinding tip and smooth off the jagged edge.
