1980 KZ750 LTD rebuild or no?
27 Jun 2011 13:41
I have a 1980 KZ750 LTD. pictures here. As you can see it has a bit of rust, and the tags on the bike are from 2002. I have no idea how long it has been sitting outside. It was given to my brother in law and then to me. I pulled it out of my father in law's backyard a couple weeks ago.
My father-in-law, who is a mechanic, is fairly confident that if I replace all of the fluids and kick her on, she'll start right up. I'm going to attempt to pick up a clymer's manual after this payday, as all of the attempts I've used to locate a service manual has been in vain. (unless I want to spend upwards of $80) The local libraries were a bust.
I managed to find a pdf of the Kawasaki service manual but the pictures are too dark to see, although the text is very legible.
I have no vehicle mechanical experience really, the first time I've ever even worked on an engine was when I bought my Honda Rebel. And on that I've only done fluid replacements, brakes, and have recently removed and cleaned the carburetor. (Its soaking right now, we'll see my success this evening lol)
My fear is the rust on the bike, and how to remove it. And whether I should even bother kicking on the engine or just tear it apart and start a rebuild. :S Also I have very limited monthly income going to this bike.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, I had the same bike also in similiar condition. What i did was used straight distilled vinegar with Lemon juice and some salt. I know it seems weird but it takes off any rust. I made a gallon of it and i took a wire brush and went to town. Anything you can soak in it. let it soak HOWEVER do not leave anything aluminum in the vinegar for more than id say a hour because it will break it down. You can fill the gas tank with it and that will take the rust out of the tank. If you do the tank let it sit for a few days. This is cheap easy way to take away rush. Let me know how it turns out.

$80 for a Genuine Kawasaki manual? I'd shy away from Clymers or Haynes. How about one of these?
