flywheel puller
14 Jun 2011 21:29
I'm hoping someone can help me with a part # or something before I just go ahead and make my own tool. lol I have a '83 kz 1100 ltd shaft. Problem is the starter clutch is bad so I need to pull the flywheel and I want to buy a puller but all the pullers listed that I have found are R.H. thread and my flywheel is L.H. thread and I'm sure of it as I'm a mechanic by trade so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Rob

I forgot which it is but it is either a axle or a swingarm bolt that you can use to pull the flywheel.
After removing the flywheel bolt Just screw it in and on hit with a impact wrench has it off.
I just pulled one.

I appreciate the reply so quickly but the axle bolt only works if the threads are right handed and mine are left handed but thanks anyway.

This should be a standard 18x1.5 puller because that is a standard "J" motor with the exception of the output shaft. Puller part #57001-1099 or Motion Pro #08-0116. I have never seen a LH puller in my 33 years of working on these.

Thank you for the quick response. I'm not surprised that you have not come across one, from what I have been reading L.H. threaded rotors are pretty rare but I have read some forums where guys or gals have been talking about encountering some with left handed threads or otherwise I would think I'm either blind or stupid but neither is the case, by the sounds of it I might have to make my own tool, not the first time. Thanks for your response. Rob

Lot's of confusion here
The bolt that holds the flywheel/rotor on is indeed left handed, but that's not the threads that axle/puller screws into. Think about it, the bolt that holds the rotor on screws into the crank, right? And the axle/puller needs to screw into the "rotor" in order to pull it off. Crank threads are left hand, rotor threads are right hand.
Rotor threaded hole is larger than crank threaded hole.
Clear now?

Thanks for the prompt response but I think you are thinking in reverse or something at least in reference to my bike. The bolt that holds on the rotor on my bike is right handed thread as in righty tighty and the threads for the puller are left handed thread as in lefty loosy but in this case lefty tighty. If the bolt holding on the rotor was left hand thread it would have a tendency to loosen up as the motor turned because left hand thread would be tightening in the same direction as the motor turns. Thanks anyway. Rob

What would be the purpose of making that a left hand thread. Matter of fact it would be kind of dumb because if you accidentally turn the engine backwards you could snap your cam chain.

Thanks for the reply but I have been a mechanic for 24yrs so I'm quite confident of what I'm seeing and I have read posts on other forums where ppl have encountered some rotors with left handed threads and how would threading in a left thread bolt on the left side of the motor turn it backwards, tightening a left threaded bolt on the left side would be turning in the same direction as the motor. Thanks anyway. Rob

Re: flywheel puller
15 Jun 2011 23:30
All the pullers that I have seen are for R.H. thread and they are external thread, so I came to the conclusion that mine must be set up for the two piece puller where the outer piece is L.H. thread and the inner part is R.H. thread. It's all good though I made my own puller and got the bastard off and I knew I could do that before but like to use the right tool for the job if possible. Of course now I have to wait for the parts for the starter clutch, just can't wait to ride. Thanks for trying to help. Rob
