Clutch cable too long?
29 May 2011 08:54
I Recently replaced a broken clutch cable on my '80 kz1000. It has dragbars so I got a shorter cable as recommended on this forum. Can't remember the length now or find the thread I saw what to get but it was at least a couple inches shorter.
The problem is everytime I ride I get more and more slack in cable and now I have it all the way adjusted out at the handlebar as well as in the middle.
Question: is there any way I can reroute it so that it will be the right length or adjust it any where it connects at the clutch pedal? Any ideas or do I need to just order an even shorter cable and start over? It's so close to working now but everytime I ride it seems to need more adjusting after a few gear changes. I've never seen this before so thinking I maybe did something wrong when I installed it. Thanks for any help. Awesome forum. I just want to get to riding my new bike asap!

Yeah... something sounds a little funny - it really shouldnt need constant adjustment. granted they so stretch at first, but not too much, and not for long.
Have you adjusted it at the middle adjsuter correctly? That takes up lots of slack usually.
OH, make sure you have correctly setup the clutch rod pressure on the sprocket cover (engine case).
maybe the nut has slipped and its backing away from the rod...
Check it.

Yes. The gap might be too big and thereby requiring excessive cable play just to close the gap before the adjuster screw meets and begins to press against the end of the push rod.

Ya, thanks guys for responses. I took off the little plate and the locknut fell out. Duh. Anyway, it's perfect now. Hope I didn't do any damage forcing it in and out of first on my last ride. It's so great when you find a simple solution!
