Dupont Nylon Sprocket
25 Apr 2006 16:56
Anyone here ever use a NEP Nylon Sprocket? They are machined from Dupont Zytel Nylon. They weigh about 30% of whar a steel sprocket weighs. I have had one on my 650 for about 3 years. First I ever heard about them were in a Motor Cyclist mag called Great Bikes of the 70's. Then one came up on e-bay. These things are tough and neither the chain or it shows wear. It is silent and I have to lube chain maybe about 1/4 of the time I used to. I can't find them anywhere and I once heard they had trouble with them shattering. I can find no info or anyone who has used one. The mag swears by them says over 61,000 miles no problems. I still have the mag. I thin k there is a 45T one on e-bay right now. Anybody got any info?

Back in the late 70's when I raced on dirt bicycle tracks I had a front one on my Cooks Brothers bike.
SUPER lightweight!
They originally came in sort of a dull black/gray-ish color, but were then offered in various other colors to compliment/accent the particular colors of a riders bike.
I haven't seen them in years, so I don't know if they're even still available.
A bicycle shop that deals in dirt bicycle race products might know the manufacturer IF still available, and you could always check with them to see if they also make them for motorcycles.

I just got an email from the e-bay seller. The one he has is NOT the NEP. He says it's a funny gold metal. The NEP is black.

Bob is that an experience you had? If so were you hammering it or was it just ordinary fatigue? Just wondering if I should heave it. I'd hate to, cause like I said it shows no wear or stress.

depending what bike you use them on they are probably OK, but I won't use one for 900cc and larger

I had one on my Z1A and i hammered on it pretty hard. Chains back then were good for about a month. If the chain goes so does the sprockets. A big chunk came out of mine when a friend got on it hard without breaking traction. From my experence i would say they could take a lot of punishment.Should even be better today considering they have had 30 years to inprove on the counpound. Roy
