That is not a 1978 KZ650.  Maybe it was built in late 1978, but It is a 1979 or later model.  Ed

Agree the frame number will help to ID what it began its life as.  In looking at the pics you posted I see basically a D model.;  Painted fenders, 16 inch rear wheel, no duck tail, what I call the coffin tank, but it appears to have either B,C or F model side covers.  I do agree with Ed that is appears to be a 79 model as it has 2 bolt front foot pegs.

Those side covers are reproduction units but are correct for a SR (D model) the SR cover is taller than a B/C/F cover. PO has put a B/C badge on it, correct badge has "SR" over the 650 and no "KZ" on it. You are correct on the two bolt foot peg brackets from 1979 and above. They produced the SR from 1978 until 1981.
