1979 kz1000 POLICE part cross ref. question?
10 Apr 2006 18:41
Im considering buying a 1979 KZ1000P police bike. But the exhaust is not original and looks kinda cheap..
So Im curious if anyone can tell me if a exhaust system from a 1982 to the 90's police bike will fit???
Someone told me that a exhaust from a 1982 will not fit...
Any ideas.. Thanks Joe

you can make just about anything fit, I put the exhaust from a 79-81 kz1000J/kz1100 on my old model bike. I had to make custom exhaust collar sleeves and brackets for the rear. I picked up my brand new, never installed exhaust for $212.00 plus shipping. I was willing to pay $500.00.

I know that the 79~81 Police bike had diff part numbers than the 82~90 for all of the exhaust pipes.
It could be as simple as them being shaped differently, or even mounting slightly differently. Like jtmcculloch said, almost anything can be made to fit.
One thing that might make a difference though between the years is that up to 79~81 they are 1020cc, and 82~90 are 1000cc.
I'm not sure, but maybe the exhaust port openings where of a diff size due to the CC size diff.

The right side exhaust pipe holder(collar)part # 18069-1004 for the 79-81 P1000 or C2/C3/C4 bikes are identical to 19 other models. Ranging from 77KZ1000A1 to 81 P1000, including 79/80 MK11, 78/80 Z1R, 80 shaft and the 77 to 80 LT D's. However, the right hand inner exhaust pipe, part # 18049-1019 only swaps with the 78 A2A 1000, 80 C3 POLICE, 80 G1 CLASSIC, 81 C4A POLICE. The guys above definitely know their stuff. All I did here was give you a rough year/model perspective, with two exhaust parts, as per interchangeability through cross referencing software.
