I'm baffled, now
13 Aug 2009 09:55 - 21 Nov 2019 08:10
Making a Kerker knock-off baffle. I'm, making it similar to a Kerker K series muffler. The canister is a Kerker or Kerker knock off, but it is beat up from years of track duty. I got it with no baffle, so here it goes. (Also, just starting to learn how to weld with flux core MIG, man is it messy... wish I had my Oxy-A rig... slower, but neater.)
First the screen. I bought it at Menards. It's expensive, so if anyone wants some, I have most of it still left over I can sell.
It forms really easily around a pipe in a vice.

Next, found some old rollers at work that were close to the right diameter for pipe stock.

The tailpipe will fit into the center of the end-cap doughnut.

EDIT: I originally went with a tube within a tube design for the exit to make the baffle more stable. But it was heavy, so I removed it and later just put a stop ring on the pipe to stop the baffle from sliding backward. The following three photos are of the first design.

Now the other end is rougher. The canister is mangled, so the entrance to the baffle has to have a wierd shape to it. If I get a new canister somewhere, I'll have to cut off the entrance and weld on a nicer one.

I was going to weld the slits, but then realized brazing would do a better job here. The MIG tends to burn open slits into large holes.
EDIT: I'd probably weld it now, having had more time with the mig.
