Sprocket cover questions!
15 Jun 2009 18:33 - 15 Jun 2009 18:53
I am having to replace my sprocket cover because my sprocket came off and knocked a chunk out of mine (can't believe that happened). I torqued the sprocket nut to 100 ft lbs and used red thread locker, so hopefully it'll stay on this time. I bought a cover on eBay, but when I received it, I noticed that it looks a lot different on the back side (see photo). Apparently it is from an older model. Is the stuff that sits to the rear of the clutch release remnants of a chain oil pump? The cover seems to bolt up fine to my '77 KZ1000LTD. Will that extra stuff cause any problems? What is the purpose of the foam and mesh guard that was screwed to the inside of the '77 sprocket cover (and can't be attached to the older one)? Lastly, if I install the sprocket guard (photo lower right) that I found, will that prevent this from happening again? Thanks to all the bike gurus for helping this novice out.

Imo, the sprocket guard won't do much toward preventing damages resulting from a sprocket nut coming loose. Because it's thin and gets chewed up quickly. Frequently, it's not re-installed, but I prefer having it in place for whatever purpose MaKaw intended.
I believe the sprocket guard was no longer fitted beginning with the 1977 KZ1000 which started using the foam and mesh guard. And am uncertain whether there's enough room for the sprocket guard under the later cover with foam and mesh guard remaining in place.
Am wondering whether the KZ1000 mission cover still has the same three threaded holes for the screws attaching the sprocket cover.
Good Luck!

Yes, the 3 holes for the sprocket guard are still there on my '77.

As long as you have it apart, clean, inspect, and re-grease the clutch actuation mechanism. Check the lingage where the clutch cable for excess play.
