Oil pan gasket leaking
04 Jun 2009 00:23
Ok, so i went out to fire up the z1 to ride to work, and it fired up no problems at all. When i was putting on my helmet i realised there was a small puddle of oil underneath of her about the size of a silver dollar, so i hit the kill switch. I looked underneath the bike and from what i could see the leak is coming from the oil pan gasket by the stator and sproket cover. When i installed the oil pan gasket i did so dry, i had a sneaking suspision that would come back and bite me in my tush........and it did. Im going up to the bike shop when i wake up and getting so yamabond gasket adhesive/sealent. Then im going to pull the pan, clean the oil off everything, put a thin layer on the pan itself, put the gasket over it, then i was thinking about putting another thin layer over it for better sealing. Any ideas? Thank's guy's. Later, jim

Might want to reconsider the "adhesive" formula, and go with just a sealant. Akin to Permatex #2, retains slight flexibility, and easier to remove pan and gasket the next time.
Already has 17 pan bolts (plus oil filter bolt) to hold things together, without needing an adhesive.
Good Luck!

Are you sure it's the oil pan gasket leaking? I'd check the grommet where the alternator wires come out. It gets dry and cracked.
www.z1enterprises.com
sell replacement grommets for I believe $12.38 You'll have to cut and splice wires as the ends won't go throught the grommet.

IMHO, yamabond is too strong for an oil pan gasket. You'll have a hell of a time ever getting it off. It's intended for joining engine cases and the like, which you rarely ever disassemble.
I think a better choice would be something like the black ultra HI-temp gasket sealer they sell at Pep Boys. It is very good at sealing, but easy to remove.
For assembling: clean both surfaces dead clean and wipe with acetone to remove any oil. Run a thin bead on both surfaces, then put the gasket onto the pan. Put the pan on and install the bolts but only pull up lightly, enough to seat the pan and squeeze any excess sealer out of the joint. I use a socket in my fingers to tighten just a little. and get the pan set into proper place.
Let dry overnight, then torque the pan to spec.
