82 KZ440 belt exhaust
20 Aug 2016 12:54
Hi, I have a 1982KZ440 belt drive. It has 2 exhaust pipes that would have a connector pipe on the underside of the bike. The connector is missing so the bike is loud. I would like to get it quieter so I am unsure if I can plug those holes or if I have to have the connector pipe for the bike to run properly. Thanks for the help!

How clean are the pipes?

They are pretty clean. A little rust on the extensions where the connector would go. But they seem to be in good shape.

Pics would help. You can make a new tube to fit if it's not too bad.

Steve's idea is a good one (recreating the H-pipe). This is kind of an oversimplification, but the crosspiece is there to allow each cylinder to send exhaust through both mufflers; it provides balance between the two pipes and slightly better flow than having one straight pipe and muffler per cylinder.
If it helps, Mac makes a 2-into-2 exhaust for the KZ400/440 that has no H-pipe, so it wouldn't be required as such. (Their pipes may be of slightly larger diameter, removing the benefit of the H-pipe.) In the short term you should be able to cap the holes and have a quieter ride.

In one thread here a member used copper pipe as a tube with clamps.

Looks like there is still something to work with. Measure how wide it is and the OD of the openings.
