Doing maintenance is GOOD!

Just finished the 600 mile service on my 750E after its rebuild. Took it out for some nice pulls up to redline before hand to warm up the oil of course.

Torqued the head and found all the nuts were still nice and snug. Score one for OEM gaskets. I've found some aftermarket gaskets tend to compression more than OEM and the torque falls off pretty fast.

Next I checked the valve clearances and found one valve was really tight. Not sure what happened there but very glad I checked. Went to work swapping out the shim and after removing the ignition cover to turn over the engine I found oil inside. Was fearing the worst but (thankfully) found it was only the oil pressure sensor that was leaking. I have a spare so took care of that too.

Moral of the story is to do your maintenance, don't just wait for crap to break.

Truer words were never written! A little while back when I was lubing my drive chain I found the clip from the master link was missing. I can't image why unless if fractured and fell off. No harm done since I found the problem before the master link side plate came off, but if I hadn't found it when I did it might have turned ugly. Maintenance is a good thing. Ed

Master link is missing on my bike too. Is that because I have shaft bike? :)

My master link is missing too. Maybe because I have a continuous chain on one bike and a shaft on the other.

Yes indeed, this happens when you don't

Had to get a new pivot bolt because the old one was mushroomed to unsuitability getting it out.Took about a week of pounding, dousing with penetrating oil and in the end some heat to get the mess out

Agree on the oem gaskets but did use the Wiseco head gasket with almost the same results as you....... Had one exh valve tighten up from .055 to .0035 and one from .0055 to .0045 and opened them up one shim each ..... all others stayed or was no more than a half a thousand off.........I like your tips on brake cyl parts and hoses too...... will be ordering hoses from where you did also and making my own...... used a master link for ever with good results but decided to have a bike shop peen the link on this time..... and yes I re lubed the swingarm after removing it. ;).....

If there is a maintenance item I do to much it is carb syncing ........ always am looking for a perfect synch even though its always v close.....points too before I bought the Dyna..... always was picturing those point blocks wearing and being a little off.

can't agree enough.

I've got a Z1B in for a top end rebuild - so many other non engine related service issues with it.
So many loose bolts...
Cush drive rubbers knackered.
rear brake seized (bike should go a lot better now just by fixing this !)
advance retard seized
cables all needed oiling
corroded electrical contacts
rear tyre worn out
etc etc
