Another one for my new collection.
21 May 2009 20:11 - 21 May 2009 20:13
Well, I've bought another one.
I just bought my dad's 1980 KZ750 (four cylinder) tonight. He's had it for a year- bought it from a guy who got ripped off by a local motorcycle shop. They charged the guy a crapload to rebuild the engine without solving the problem, which my dad thinks is simply a bad cam chain tensioner. The noise is awful when the bike is started, but the engine seems to run OK otherwise. But, my dad got it for a good price, and it's been sitting ever since.
I offered to buy it so my dad would have the cash to buy ANOTHER bike he's had his eye on (a 1980 Yamaha XS1100 Special) down the road from my job.
I'd like to know what people on here think of these bikes. I see a lot of people who have kz1000's, 900's, and 650's, but I haven't really heard much about the 750's. I figured I'd regret not buying it; it's only got 17k miles, and it looks beautiful.
Any opinions?

as far as i can see they are just a hotrodded version of the 650 a bit bigger and more up to date but with close to the same reliability of the 650. great little bike as well.

Thanks, timebomb. If the bike handles anywhere near as well as my GS, which I'm pretty sure it will, I'll be thrilled. I also just needed a bit of justification for buying it since it was a short notice type of decision.

The 750 is just basically a bored out 650 with a little more cam. Not sure about the carbs...

Love my 750...had it for about 2 years now and it's very reliable. Glad I've got something to ride 'cause my 900 projects going to take awhile.....

I love mine.
Solid as a rock with enough power for what I do. I've had mine for 7 years and it has 65,000km on it.
If it rattles like hell when you start it up and rattle goes away when running then it could be the primary chain which will do this if the carbs are out of synch. Simple fix.
Put one end of a wooden dowel against the crancakse and the other against your ear like a stethescope. This will help pinpoint your rattle. I think a loose cam chain would tend to rattle right through all speeds.

Oh boy Oh boy!!!
Thanks for your replies, everybody.
I popped a new tensioner onto the bike yesterday with my dad's help, and when the thing fired up, she ran like new. I'm so excited.

I have had plenty of experience with 750's as i had one, and both my buddy's have them. Spent alot of time working on them, and built my 810cc motor from a 750. Have loved them, and they have always been very dependable. I am sure you will love it.

Thanks guys. I'm going to head to the DMV probably this week to transfer the plates over to the KZ so I can work on my GS in the mean time. I just need a seat that belongs to this bike, rather than the crappy CSR seat that's on there.
