Thought I was going to get lucky today

I travel six states in the upper midwest and usually stop into bike shops when I need to kill some time. Several years ago I happened to find a dealer in IA that couldn't get rid of a brand new 2000 W650. He made me a deal I couldn't refuse and I bit. So, I figure that I might get lucky again some day and I thought today was the day! I stopped into a dealer and in the back where the used bikes were I spotted a silver, 1978 (I believe) Z1R in really great stock shape. I have wanted one of those since I bought my 78 KZ1000. Unfortunately, I found out that it was a customer's in for service! So, I left my business card with the sales manager and asked him to contact the owner to see if he would be interested in selling. Maybe a little tacky but you never know unless you ask, right? While I'm not interested in paying a premium, what would a fair price be on this bike? BTW, it had around 12,000 miles.

Thanks.

If it caught your' eye, and was just in for a service, I would guess between 3 grand & 3800. just a WAG, but then I'm here. G

there is an abandoned cb1100 f in the back of a honda shop in a corner with some junkers around it,that is like a ghost town, never seen a customer in the place and only half the ceiling lights on....i was getting a battery last year there... ....i spied it and inquired...the owner of the shop looked grumpy and said "check back in six-to eight months, were to busy to do mechanics leans right now"....
a quarter inch of dust, the red colored version and the seat to the side like someone once tried to charge the battery......
i gotta call back one day and see what the old grump would take...but at first..... i thought i got lucky too.....you don't know less you ask..anyway...

Almost exactly how I found my latest project. Was up in Laramie, WY visiting my daughter in college when we stopped by the Kawasaki dealership to see if they had any parts bike (the 750 needed a new mirror). The guy at the counter said I could look on the side of the building, they had a few there. Mostly a bunch of dirt bikes, but under a tattered cover I found a '76 kz900 Ltd!

It had been there for four years waiting for the PO to pay off its repair bill. To make a long story short(er), we negotiated through the dealer and I paid off the bill ($800)and got the bike plus the title.

It's in rough shape, right now stripped down to the frame and motor, but when I get it done....it's going to be nice!
