New battery charger on the way

With the talk of putting the motorcycles away for the season and the mention of the battery tender charger, has anyone ever used a Pulse Tech Extreme? I've used my battery tender for years, but have had a lot of battery failures and I think the tender is part to blame. If you hook a DC ampmeter up to a battery tender, you'll find the charge is linear meaning it's simply a amp draw related to how discharged the battery is. It starts high, tapers down and at some point the light turns from red to green, but the charge rate stays linear. Never goes into storage mode really and I think it cooks batteries. I hope this works better.

i have never heard of that make before but ihave one from yuasa that recovers sulfated batteries[the number one killer of batteries followed closely by me dropping them] it's a 1.5 amp charger that uses a 5 stage cycle that will charge up to 16 volts.it seems to work quite well. and it's pretty resonable in price. part no yua1201501 staight from yuasa batteries.

I've had a "Battery Tender Plus" for over 10 years and it has worked perfect. After my accident the bike was plugged in for over 7 months and battery is still in perfect condition. Would still be interested in your chargers performance Ron, give us a report when you get it.;)

I got the charger already and was surprised how light it is first of all, like 1/2 the weight of a battery tender. Of course "Made in China" on the box, so I was not real hopeful. Remove it from the box and it looks like a well made unit. First hook it to the battery, then plug it in and it has the LEDs that indicate hookup is correct ect, then the bottom charge light lights, the next 3 light above it flash to indicate charging, then the lights to the right of there indicate the approx percent of charge the battery is at. I volt tested the battery before hooking it up and it was sitting at 11.4 so definately in need of charge. The 25% charge light was lit, then quickly moved up to 75%. Hooked a logging multimeter up for an amp test the entire time. Initial hookup showed 2.5A, tapering down gradually to 0.7A. Entire charge took 6 1/2 hours @ an overall average of 1.4A, then the charge light goes off, the 100% light is lit and the charger goes into storage mode. In this mode the charger sits at 0A and pulses a quick burst of 1.5A at intervals of about 5 seconds apart. It equates to an average of only about 0.10A. So the charger does truly shut down and go into storage mode as advertised and can be left on indefinately and not cook the battery. Two more things I like about it are it's silent, where the battery tender can be buzzy and runs barely warm to the touch where the battery tender gets dang hot. I'm impressed and going to test the Battery Tender tonight for comparison.

I did the battery tender test of course on a different battery. This one checked about 11.8v at start so a little better charge initially. The battery tender starts at about 1.1A and gradually tapers down to 0.5A at 5hrs, then suddenly drops to 0.2A then gradually tapers off to about 0.1A. So my comments that the tender never shuts down were completely wrong. Both chargers can sit on a battery forever charging at the 0.1A rate, the difference is the tender is a constant, and the pulse tech is a pulse. So does the pulse do any better job at maintaing the battery is the question.
