Towed
29 Sep 2008 15:55 - 29 Sep 2008 15:58
I had to take a trip out of town for business. My tabs expired on the 18th. The morning of the 19th, my bike was stolen (towed) for having expired out of state tabs...
This was particularly ironic in that I got home from the airport the morning of the 20th with new tabs in hand and had nowhere to stick it (other then the obvious suggestion by the city). Who knew that expired tabs on a bike that was legally parked was reason for the city to steal it? Somebody has clearly been eying me to catch it in less than 24 hours...

I feel for you, man, the same thing happened to me. The state "stole" one of my bikes, from my condo parking space, many years ago, for out of date tags. After making many calls to State legislators(thieves), I found out that MD has a special "squad" just to steal out of date vehicles, NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE LOCATED!!! This means that they can come onto PRIVATE PROPERTY, look under any tarp or covering and steal your vehicle. Even if it's a high dollar, classic/antique that you are in the process of restoring, if it doesn't have a current tag. I never got mine back because the fines/storage/etc was much more than it was worth (at the time)

I did see somewhere that there is an effort to get rid of old vehicles because of their lack of today's smog equipment. And that's a sneaky way to do it. Some kind of green/EPA thing. There are those that literally hate what we do. And some of them are in high places.

That sucks big nuts.
Here in LA they just ticket you. Also, you have to be parked on a public street. They can't come on private property.

Yeah, I thought that they couldn't come onto privite property, also, until I started calling around. Apparantly this law was passed, in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Maryland, in the '80's as an "eyesore" law. MD's been locked-in Democrat, since the late '60's. Eventhough the condo parking lot was private property and I paid rent on my space w/my condo fees, I thought maybe it was because it wasn't personal pp. I called the Govenors office as well as State Reps and asked if it ment that they could come into your yard, and was told yeah, and they can even look under tarps.I was also told that there was a State Police "special taskforce" that that was all they did. All of y'all might want to check w/your State's...you might be unpleasantly surprised. Just because you aren't aware of these laws, or they aren't enforced, doesn't mean that they aren't there.

So... Does that mean that you have to have insurance on a vehicle that's not running and that you're not using just in order to get new tags?

Yep, I doubt the law is generally enforced to the extent I've indicated, but the point is, they have a LAW, that says that they can. I mean, I'm pretty sure that they are not gonna take a vehicle from my yard or driveway, but if they wanted to, they can.So... They can't do that out here in Kansas, half the vehicles would disappear and they'd run out of places to put them.
Seriously, dude, that sucks big time. Get the ultimate revenge, move out of that sorry state and take your tax dollars with you. I mean it.
