Shipping a frame????
21 Sep 2008 08:08
I am going to be selling a frame on ebay. I am not sure how to ship it. I am in Canada. Iam not sure the post office will take it because of size and weight. Has anyone did this before? Also would I have to crate it or just ship as is with documents attached?

Don't know if this will help, but I bought a KZ1000 frame from a guy in Illinois on ebay a few years ago who shipped the frame to me via Forward Air, Inc. I simply drove down to Forward Air's building at Orlando International to pick it up.

It is a 73 Z1 frame. I also have a few KZ900A4 frames. I will look around and see if I have a 650 frame.

I shipped a CL77 (Honda 305 Scrambler) frame from Calgary to San Diego. I found a suitable cardboard carton at a local plumbing wholesale store (I think it had a shower enclosure in it originally) and shipped it via Purolator Ground. No probs with size or max dimensions. The buyer had it in 4 days for a very reasonable price. The price of fuel has gone up substantially since I sent my shipment so that will have changed but Puro Ground was farrrrrr cheaper than UPS, FedEx or standard common carrier trucking companies.
Get the frame packed up and then phone around for quotes once you have the weight and dimensions.

I bought a frame from for my bike and it was shipped Fed-ex. It had a couple of layers of shrink wrap around it. As far as the documents, The were sent seperatly a couple a days later via Fed-ex which is a good idea.

I have shipped and received frames via UPS. If you ship INTO Canada using UPS, they have AGENTS (not sure what an agent is or does but they charge a BUNCH) making UPS a poor decision going into Canada. Going from Canada to the US may not be an issue. When you ship UPS, you don't have to box the frame... just ship as-is. I think it would be best to take some card board and make a place to put the shipping label so that it will stay attached.

If you ship cross-border, you will have to have all the paperwork on the frame. It's far more complicated than it might first seem.
I've shipped frames via UPS internationally, I just had to put card down the sides of the frame, and wrap any protrusions.
What made it more complicated was the title on the frame. This had to be mailed to US Customs first to be cleared for shipment - this includes a full check on the VIN number - then the title was stamped showing it was leaving the country.
I know you are in Canada, but I suspect you'll run into similar issues.
If this is going to the USA, the person receiving the frame will probably need a customs paper stating all import dutues have been paid on the frame before they can register the VIN in the USA.
