1979 KZ 650 LTD
23 Jul 2008 19:26
Hello I am new here. I have come across a 1979 KZ 650 LTD and have a coupple of questions. One Every place I look It says that the 650 LTD was only made in 1980. The one I bought is titled as a 79? Next Is I would know what it is worth? It is in great shape, Has some extra crome on it like highway pegs and back rest and rack. It also only has about 7000 miles on it. It would be great if I could find a place that showes how many were made and if is rare? Well thanks for your time.

First of all welcome to the forum. The first thing we need to do is determine just what you have. You are correct in that the 650 LTD was only offered in 1980. The changes from a 79 650SR were that the LTD came with a drum brake in the rear and a single disc brake up front. If your bike is set up like this odds are good that you have the LTD model and it would be an 80 model that someone at the title bureau made a mistake on. The other scenario is that you in fact have a 79 650 SR that has had 650 LTD bodywork installed. If this is the case the bike should have triple disc brakes. You can also look at the neck of the frame and get the date of manufacture off the white sticker if it is still attached. Hope this helps,we also love pictures here and that will help pinpoint what you have.

If the date of manufacture is 7/79-6/80 it's a 80 model. Kawasaki gets a head start on the model years

Well The bike has Disk breaks front and rear. It is also exactly like the 1980 KZ 650 LTD on this website under kz info. The bike itself is all original. Also it has the coffin style gastank not the teardrop. About the vin # and manufacture date. The date on the frame is 78, titled as a 79, but only made in 80? It could be a half year 79 I guess.

The VIN will tell the tale. If it begins with KZ650D then it's an SR. If it begins with KZ650E then it is an LTD.
The body work is interchangeable between the two so it's quite possible that it had LTD sidecovers put on earlier in its life.

Welcome.
Nice find.
As far as what it's worth, it all depends on finding the right buyer.
Could be worth $1000~$2000 depending on originality (being stock).
Bring on some pictures as well.
