Qdude, didn't I read that you have an aftermarket pipe and larger main jets? If so, you're not doing too bad at 35 MPG. That's only about 11% or so worse than mine with stock jets and pipes.

Based on several reports here, I may need to revise my understanding of slide carbs. I always thought my poor mileage was due to the carbs and that there was nothing I could do about it. But if some of you guys are getting 50+ out of 650's with the same type carbs, I guess I need to do some tunin'. My bike had a Kerker installed by the 1st owner and it was probably never jetted for it.

83 GPZ550
4-1 exhaust and pod filters and not stock Mikuni carbs that never needs the choke.
35 mpg
83 GPZ550 www.brockcg.com/leftBkrd.jpg
Stock everything
62 mpg
The stock air filters are super tight but I will deal for the improved mpg.
The modified one will go to the track or be sold after a rebuild.

Great numbers all around except one you forgot:
waistline!
My KZ650C2 gets ~6.5 litres per 100km! uhm..<click click click> 36mpg? All city, Kerker, stock airbox, 110 mains.
On the highway this drops to ~4.5L/100km, 110km/h... <click click click> 52mpg @ 70mph.
90kg (~200lbs) w/ gear & tank bag.

well I just test rode an 81 KZ550... not!
It felt like a little underpowered toy that was going to bounce off the road at any moment. (no offense to 550 owners)
I owned one myself about 20 years ago, but I guess you can't go back. Looks like another 1000 or maybe 750 is in my future. Tall gearing and a tad lean jetting will save some bucks.

On my 1979 SR650:
I changed the sprockets and chain last year slightly from 16-42 to 16-40. My RPM @ 70MPH dropped from 5500 to about 5300. Not much but Im on the right track. My mileage varies from about 38 to 40, depending on a variety of factors...about a 1MPG improvement from the previous year.
Yeah, I wish my fuel economy was better. My friend has a 1500cc Harley and gets about 45MPG. My 650cc machine gets about 5MPG less.
Go figure!

You can go to a 17 tooth sprocket on the front of a 650 very easily. My SR has a 16/38 and the 650B has a 17/42 combo and I think the 650B ended up playing a bit better.
By going three teeth smaller on the rear of the SR, the axle is near the end of the slide with the stock 102 link chain. By going up one tooth in front and stock 42 on the rear I had no problem fitting the 102 link chain and I have plenty of adjustment room on the 650B.
Last year the 650B was turning in about 42 MPG which is about 2.5 to 3 MPG better than the SR. It seems to have a '78 carb set on it (VM22SS?) with the pilot screws instead of the air screws. I'm not sure if that is making the difference or not.
