\"Rare\" ebay item

I see lots of things like this on ebay and just shake my head. I won't bother linking it but here is a pic and "description".

NOS Kawasaki KZ1000 KZ750 Z1 900 KZ650 Tachometer

Description:

This auction is for a tachometer from a 1979 Kawasaki KZ1000. This is kind of a rare tach as it has a 9000 RPM redline and goes up to 12000 RPM's. This will work on KZ900, KZ1000, Z1-R, Z1 Classic KZ650 and possibly others. Some of them have subtle differences (the Z1 has a fuel light and others may have different redlines and some only go to 10 or 11000RPM's), but they mount up the same and will function correctly.

1980 KZ650F1, Bought new out the door for $2,162.98!

Actually it is rare because 1979 KZ1000 had a 8500rpm readline. This must have been a Kawasaki error where the wrong tach was put on the bike new. Makes it a collector item:laugh:
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I've seen that I believe 650 and maybe 900/1000 tachs and speedos are "clocked" different as far as the two mounting screws?

All the tachs and speedos of the era will mount the same, so you can use any Z1/KZ1000/KZ650 ect on any of them interchangably as far as mounting. Different red lines ect is the difference in them. No doubt this speedo was a KZ650 with it's 9000rpm redline, but could have been others. Was definately not off a 1979 KZ1000 though.

Ron, I don't think that tach will mount on your shafty... the mounts are different as I recall. Hey, now that I have a working fuel gauge, I ain't trading my somewhat erratic tach for a good working anyway! Anyone have any idea why the redline on a 1015cc dropped to 8500 rpm in 79? Certainly the technology wasn't any different from the initial Z1 in 73 to that point... The MK II engine actually had some beefier feature that should have allowed a HIGHER redline; perhaps 9100 rpm hehe. Anyone have a theory?
