Tiny tank leak/sealer?
28 Jan 2008 17:18
Well I've had another setback with my tank after the first issue of the petcock leaking around the handle like crazy, so I got a Pingel from Z1 and that problem is fixed.
The new problem, I decide to fill the tank all the way up so help prevent rust. Just as I topped the tank off, I see gas dripping off the back end of the tank pretty damn fast. The rear tang that the seat makes contact with is leaking around the spot welds from what I can tell. Makes about 3 drips a second. It appears that when I had the tank dipped it must have removed either a bit of rust on the inside on the spot weld or there was some kind of sealer on it that it dissolved away in the dip.
Any suggestions on how to seal this other than grinding the tang off and soldering a patch plate over the hole?
I really don't know what that tang is there for exactly. I assume it is to keep the tank on the bike in case of a drop as the seat has it held down. The thing is though that there is another tang on the rear of the tank that snaps into a rubber grommet on the frame and the seat is angled over top of the rear of the tank anyway so it would take a lot of force to knock it out from under the seat. I'll probably leave the tang off unless I can see or hear another reason for it other than as a retainer.

Is it somewhere where it can be soldered or brazed?

Here is a photo of another tank I had in my photo file that I marked up so you could see where it is leaking.
I thought about POR15, if I don't coat the whole tank with it but just the back end will it work or does it fail if there is an "edge" to it?

I used kbs coatings their ebay store is here:
link
i had a tank fail and after talking to them they recommended against using a carbon cleaning additive in the fuel and sent me a new kit free even though it was kind of my fault.
i did have pin holes in my tank which i brazed over first instead of relying on the sealer alone.

Might also consider West System two part epoxy to coat and seal inside of tank. Here is the website for further info.
