Re: Restoring a 1981 Z1000J1 in Australia
07 Apr 2025 13:24After a bit of research I've worked out the headlight/indicator bracket is off a GPZ1100, the arms are located low down on the bracket to allow for the lunchbox instrument cluster.I'm dreading pulling the engine down, not so much because of the difficulty but more of what further damage $$$ I'm going to discover, anyway I've made a start Camshafts are out, I've measured the Shims and thankfully there's enough margin to sort the ones with less than .03mm clearance.
I'll get the Head off tonight and maybe the Cylinder if my mate comes over and gives me a hand.
Meanwhile, new Meter Bracket and Blinkers have turned up from Webike, so thought I'd try and fit them up:
Rears - PO dodgy'd up some front headlight/blinker mount, so the only hole showing below the ducktail is the round hole for the headlight, do I try and dremel the diamond shaped hole in the bracket or grind away the plastic on the blinker to fit the round hole?
Fronts - Fitted the blinkers and attached the headlight shell, check out the gap between the meters and the shell, something weird going on here...Any clues??
The modified headlight/indicator bracket po used for the rear indicators kind of fits, the arms are welded on very close to the top attachment points, this had the headlight touching the meters, for now I've just fitted a spacer to provide some clearance and made a new lower attachment point (original bracket was cut off).
So now I need to come up with a bracket to hang the rear indicators, this is what I've come up with so far, once I've dremeled the "diamond" shaped hole for the grommet I'll trim off the excess metal around it and paint it black, once the ducktail and tail light are fitted I think it will look ok.

A bit of an update on where I'm at...
Engine has been pulled down, rear cam chain guide was broken at the bottom as suggested.
Combustion chamber on cylinder 1 had a lot of pitting/corrosion, apparently caused from water sitting in there, unfortunately it was also under the edge of the head gasket which meant it needed to be welded up and machined.
Valves also had the same kind of pitting on the seats so they're all getting replaced along with new springs and guide seals.
New cam chain has been fitted.
Hoping to get away with a Hone and new rings rather than going oversize.
I removed the sump cover so I could check the oil pump screen, lucky I did it's full of crud...plus a grease like muck covering the bottom of the cover and heaps of this stuff
it looks like a red Bakelite type product?? Is there anything made out of that inside the motor?
Also found this washer in there, have no idea where that's from?

Yep just keeps getting better....
Not much I can do about it except to remove whatever coating is remaining, I'm going to assume it will still work without the coating??

I guess you would need to see how bad it is, I believe this is the adhesive that holds the magnets in place not just a coating

I was just thinking about what the coating does...
I'll get the cover off tomorrow and have a look and take it from there.
Thanks Wookie

23 May 2025 03:52 - 23 May 2025 03:55The magnets would be too brittle if they were just solid magnets so they are magnet /steel laminates which reduces eddy currents. The coating is to stop the steel oxidising which would cause the laminates to seperate. You can paint/coat them with anything heat resistant as long as its air tight.I was just thinking about what the coating does...
