What up guys. I’m replacing both my rear sprocket and front sprocket. Buying new since old ones are chewed up. Looking for a little more off the line vs at the high end. Any feedback here would be great. Ideas and or suggestions needed. 1978 kz1000a2. Basically stock right now.

What chain Setup do you want to go? 630 or 530?

For a 630 chain 15/35 urban area or 15/33 for long highway rides.

If you buy new sprockets buy a new chain. An old chain will rather quickly wear new sprockets, and old sprockets will quickly wear out a new chain. That's why chain and sprockets should be replaced as a set. Ed

All sound advise
My 78 LTD came geared 15 / 33 Remember it has a 16 inch rear wheel
Most 18 inch wheel bikes I have seen commonly came 15 / 35
Avoid going with a 14 tooth front gear and go with the larger rear sprocket.
If you have shit loads of power like a turbo you can run a 16 / 33

530 chain/sprockets is the way to go. 630 is for guys stuck on nostalgia.

If you want a little more off the line, I think that the easiest would be to drop a tooth from the front sprocket. Keep in mind that will move the rear wheel back slightly on the swingarm. If you want even more,(off the line), drop a front tooth and add 1 or 2 teeth to the rear sprocket. Again this would change wheel and tire size clearance to swingarm and related parts.

Got worried for a minute. I have been following this post and was worried I screwed up my ratio, I when out and looked at my '78 1000 LTD with a 16" rear 130/90 tire... I have 15 / 32... I was looking for a harder launch... Was I right or wrong...

Did you get a harder launch with 15 / 32. I f not try 14 / 32, and you probably will.

Can't tell, I changed out the sprocket years ago and have no way to compare, I just noticed most suggestions swap the front sprocket...

I already bought a new 530 o/ring chain. I will measure my rear tire and get back to y’all since reading this sounds like will be a determining factor.

15 / 32 is more of a highway ratio than 15 / 33 or 35
.
15 , 35 would make it peppier down low

Everyone and their brother including me has tried a 14 tooth front sprocket and it works fine , just harder on the chain life
That's why a larger rear sprocket is preferable but a costlier swap
But also as suggested a 530 swap is the modern way to go

Also, with a 530 chain, you will likely need to go with the largest front sprocket available to insure plenty of clearance between the chain and swingarm pivot. A 14 tooth sprocket for a 530 chain will be smaller in diameter than a 14 tooth sprocket for a 630 chain.
Here you can compare different combinations.
