The C5 ignition would be nice but it i already have new coils and wires. It will be a nice upgrade down the road.

Go to the next drugstore / pharmacy and buy 0,25 gal phosphoric acid.
dilute with water to get 30-40% acid parts if necessary.
Disassemble the advancer, put all parts in for 30 minutes and wash the parts in soapy water to neutralize the acid.
Redo the processes if necessary.

Hmmm, it doesn't appear that they have the springs listed. Furthermore the 82 and up 750 twins use a different advancer than the previous models. I can take the springs off an early model one i have thats in OK shape, i bet the springs are the same. You can have them for free.

I had read on a different post on this forum about someone using Chevy 350 springs, successfully.

Springs don't loose tension by rust., you can reuse the cleaned springs.

I just thought the acid solution would destroy the springs. It si good to know that I can reuse them. I will be trying to get them taken apart and cleaned today. Can I use axle grease to lub them once they are cleaned?

Well with all the great information from members on this forum I have restored the igniter.
I used Evapo-rust and let it sit for about 18 hours . When it was removed the weights were completely frozen and the e-clips came off in pieces but I found replacements at Lowe's. I will report after I get it installed on my next day off .

You better had separated the advancer parts before your chemical bath.
The inner surfaces could not react with the acid and will be baked together now.
18 hours is to long for such a little part.,if you had separated the parts before you will be faster and get better results.

Yes everything has been taken apart and cleaned thoroughly . It is clean enough that the timing marks show again.

If you burnish the parts that rub against each other with moly they will become slick and it won't attract crud. Rub a thin layer into the metal and wipe off any excess; don't put it on thick. Ed
