My new project

I intercepted my buddy when he was on the way to the dump with this Quad. Its a 1987 Kawasaki Bayou 300. I know I should have just let him go with it, but I needed something to get me through the rest of winter now that the KZ is done. I'm not even going to try and make it pretty, just get it running well and give it to my daughter to use on her farm.
The KZ is completed and tucked away for spring, it now has a new seat, I just can't take any pictures where it is now.

The quad should run today, new +1 oversize piston, rings and valves. The dirt on this thing is baked on, the only way I've found to get it off is to sand it.

do you know anybody with a steam cleaner?
like for cleaning heavy equipment, farm equipment.
once it is all cooked on it seems like some high heat is the only thing that will soften it up again.

I soaked it down with Simple Green and hit it with my 5 hp pressure washer with hot water infeed.
It took all the oily stuff off and loose dirt, it looked good 'till it dried. Its too cold here to use my sandblaster outside. I guess i'll just keep going with the sandpaper and brush a coat of Tremclad on the frame.
I got the motor back together with new piston and valves, but the ignition box is NG now. I have a new one from Rick's on the way but will have to adapt the harness for it to plug in.

maybe a wire wheel on a grinder or drill might be a lil quicker than sanding.

I feel your pain Roadflyer, my resto had the same issue. It was originally from Alaska and they must have lived on a dirt road. On the engine it had a combination of baked dirt wit oil. I called it baked Alaska. Only way it would come off was with a wire wheel (most of the time) or having to use a metal scrapper. Many, many hours over the months before I got all. A sand blaster would have spared me all that.

Baked Alaska- Too funny! I like that! It pretty much describes this stuff.

Thanks Roy, Blue will look great on that bike. I ordered my paint online and it looks NOTHING like what was on the color chart. That's OK, its grown on me and I like it a lot now. The only reason its not Blue or Red like the Ducatti is that I'm too cheap to throw away a $50 quart of paint when it shows up wrong!
