KZ550A project, eventual cafe.
23 Sep 2012 00:03
So I traded a '97 Kawasaki KE100 dual sport for an '82 KZ550A this week. Has 25k, and has been someones rat bike for a while. I plan on cafeing it eventually as time and money permits.
Have a tire, sprockets, chain, and converter for a muffler coming. Someone put a 4 into one Mac header on it which comes out at 2.5" which kind of sucks because no slip on is going to fit!
Weird cracking on the engine, anyone have any idea what this is from? Doesn't look like it is from impact, maybe really high heat? Runs fine but I have no idea what this cracking is from or if I can just JB weld it and not worry about it...?
Big nasty headlight and blinkers. Will be pulling these off as soon as I can afford new ones. In that vein anyone looking for a big nasty headlight or blinkers?
Thanks for looking! Will be updating as soon as I get the chain, sprockets, and tire!

Looks like a decent project you got there. The front wheel looks like it's from a Yamaha? And possibly the forks too.
I don't see any cracking on the engine, but someone spray painted the valve cover. The ends should be plain silver aluminum. There is some sealant onthe valve cover gasket and cam end plug that is a little soppy. Is that the cracking you meant?
Either way, someone's been in the valve area. In case you need to go in there, read the valve train warning in my signature. You will also find a couple manuals and some wiring diagrams, plus some carb info.
