Assuming the tach ratio is the same as my kz650 (which it probably is) you can use one of the tachs from www.mikesxs.com . The speedo units are also a direct swap for the kz650 (more accurate than the stock unit according to the radar stations on the side of the road). I got the 2.25" chrome w/ white faces for $39 a pop and have no complaints at all.

nice job on the paint! I really like the matching frame

side note...any idea if the speedo/tach from mikesxs.com would work with a kz1000. I think it should all be the same... right?

I have a set of custom side covers cut out of flat steel if your interested , Also you can use a KZ400 front fender like I did for a shorter looking one ,, The 1980 G model side covers fit but you need to change one of the mounting tabs , they are shorter more to the frame opening ,, I am a watching ,, :)

Hey guys thanks for your support. I am glad that you are enjoying the build. My wife and I had a baby girl on Tuesday! It was great and I got to deliver her myself seeing how the doctors were playing tiddly winks somewhere else! :woohoo: It was an awesome experence... So I haven't had much time to make more progress... I did get the back wheel put on for real however, and the back brake too..... Then I went and bought this bike last night. The first 650 that I have ever had. Thanks Mike for the super deal. (you know who you are) Now I am looking at a KZ1000 but it will not pull past 3 or 4,000 RPM and I don't know what would cause that? Stay tuned.

Well the 650's for sale... If you live in Minnesota and want it give me a shout. I got it running the other day. Pretty nice bike. I ordered a Tach from www.mikesxs.com and it came lightning quick! Very nice tach. Also, right on the box it says fits Yamaha and Kawasaki. Thats reassuring. The web site only talks about Yamaha's... (Which I wouldn't touch with your money) Should make some more progress worth showing soon. Stay tuned.

Congrats to you and your wife on the new baby girl! I'm happy everything came out alright ;) I'm waiting on a daughter myself, but she's arriving via China...:)

Anyway, love how the bike is coming around. Really digging the red. Getting ideas for my ratty '74 Z1 which my 14-year-old is going to help me with. Debating which way to go; restore or cafe.

Great job. Hopefully you get some miles on it before the snow flies in Minny.

Congrats on the young'n!

And I really like how the bike is coming along. I also quite like your photoshopped version...

..and regarding Shoe's tip on the '80 G twin covers, I agree. I've always hated the early huge side covers. I finally got a set of G model covers myself, and I didn't have to change anything, it's just that they only use 3 of the 4 original tabs. So you can shave the 4th off if you don't want it there...
