I bought an 82 kz 550 last year for 500 bucks. It is all original expect for the front turn signals, they are from a different year. It has 24k miles and runs pretty good. I started to minor repairs that needed to be done. As I’m working on it I’m thinking about what I can do to it.
I wanted to see everyone’s opinion should I keep it original from the factory or start making some mods. And also how far, I’d like to be able to put everything back to stock if I wanted to. As I’m sure a lot of you will say it depends what I want the bike to be, but I just want some suggestions as to what you would do if it was your bike

Also does anyone know any aftermarket tachs and speedo that work with 82 kz?

Thanks

Agreed. If the bike is in immaculate condition, keep it that way and either buy a rattier one to mod, or sell this one and buy a rattier one. ;) B)

I agree, by the looks of it, IMHO, keep it the way it is.

I would keep it like it is but I would change the handlebars to
a 650 style. KZ400 bars would probably work well also. Those
pullbacks are just not comfortable in my opinion.

JMO but that bike is in much too nice shape to go molesting it. Adding an aftermarket tach and speedo would be just throwing money down the drain. If your current gauges work just keep them as is. The money you spend will not come back to you when you sell it. You have done a nice job polishing the engine covers and the bike as a whole. Instead of dropping a few hundred bucks on new gauges why not look around for a project bike you can mess with?

Kawasaki stuck that same ugly sqaure brake light on everything back then:huh:
I tend to agree with what everyone says. The 550's have to be real special to fetch more than a couple grand.(Good for the rider but bad for the restorer).
550 parts are a bit cheaper though.
Then again, if you plan to keep it and enjoy it. Then go nuts.
