That bike looks pretty good but I'm wondering why the rear end sits up so high? Could just be somebody put longer shocks on it but it almost looks like it got rearended.

Looks like the rear tailsection has been installed wrong to me. It does look a little high though

Just for the sake of comparison here is a pic of my 83 L-3 which is essentially an 82 GPZ 750. There is really only one way to install the tail section. When you go to look at it I'd make sure you check the rear frame out good to make sure it hasn't been in an accident.

Gringo. I'm just going by the GPZ1100 but I think the 750 mounts the same, there is a rubber block that the tail slides onto from the rear, then the tail is secured with two bolts to the frame. If the tail is sitting on top of the rubber block and the tail can still be bolted with no problem the tail would sit about an inch higher at the rear.

Yep Barney that's the way the 750 mounts as well. I guess you're right, it would be possible to install it wrong, but looking at that bike something just looks out of whack. I guess we'll have to wait for Don to check it out and fill us in.

not to get too technical in the non-technical section, but why would you need new cams? Wouldn't you just need new valves, seats, seals, etc..? maybe pistons - if it's really bad.

or do you just want an excuse to spend some money on a nice find?
